at best the stairs should be just a long cube that is textured with stair rung textures

but i would prefer it as just a texture on a flat side

also the cheaper the lod shape the quicker you can make it

the smallest one just has to have the general shape of it

lemme see, it makes things look pretteh ... naaaaah, prolly even increases fps

(in a way this is actually true, if youd really model at this detail it would have worse fps)

POM uses less memory, looks the same and is faster than putting 1.5M mesh into the game.

    Proof. I demand it.
(Preferably in a real-time tech demo I can get my measly cursor around.)

It creates the illusion of depth, as 'real' modelling is also merely the illusion of depth because it's being calculated and rendered into a 2d image displayed on a 2d screen, POM is simply an alternate method of creating simulated 3d, a much quicker method in fact although it has limitations.

Assuming you use it in a way that doesn't overstep its limitations, it's indistinguishable visually, although someone who knows what to look for will be able to see where POM is used and where modelling is used, they do look slightly different, POM for example can pixellate whereas models are all vectored, but modelling has detail limitations while POM can do as much detail as a texture, but can't go round corners like a model can. They're the same quality more or less, but have different specialised uses.

Basically it works fine, shut your trap.

    That's cute. That really is.

    Proof. I still demand it.

See Natalya Tatarchuk's paper from 2004 or 2005.

It looks different because it's a different method, it doesn't look any more or less 3d.

You should really use both because both have different benefits, like I said POM does detail exceptionally well, whereas polygons do complex shapes which scale perfectly.

It's really just an extension of texturing, for years people have applied textures to models to add the fine detail on the structure, POM simply allows you to expand that detail to be 3d.

Found this (p26). Just a presentation, not a paper, but there's an image of a 1.5M model.

There are both. You just need to search a bit.

yeah guys i know it looks cool and has better performance
but can we pls just concentrate on doing the basics first?
nobody expects us to use POM
hell we are even the only sourcemod using that feature as far as i know

I could texture it for you if you want to skip the process, but I don't use 3dsmax, so you would need to convert it into something that can be read in XSI 2011

Actually I do, it's very easy to use and produces good results, you should use it as appropriate.
