The title pretty much says it all, what does Empires currently run better on server-wise and what is it most likely going to run better on in the future?
Windows, The Linux build is full of bugs and has major stability issues. If you plan on running a server with mani-mod or any other plugins, go for windows. Future speaking, I have no idea, not sure if they plan on releasing a linux build in the future.
There will be no Linux 2.2 build until Valve releases needed files. Linux build might not have assembly-level optimizations but I don't remember any bug reports.
cost too much for me! Cause u need the Hardware and a REALY good ISP. PS: ur from AU or ? gimme ur icq or somethin!
Yeah I am in AU. I already have the hardware, just looking at what OS to put on it, can go either way but Server costs about $1000 I believe if you buy it outright OEM. Updated my user profile.
If I may point out an observation: At current, there is already an aus, to people in the US it has a fairly high ping, and people in the EU are even worse - and the server is never full - it gets used for about 3-4 hours a day, and that is all. So I think you may want to give this thought - do you really see demand for a server, or is this server just because you want one? And furthermore, would you do better to just rent one?
That has nothing to do with the topic. So everyone thinks I should run Windows on the server? I have a box I'm looking at using: Dual Xeon 2.8GHz 2GB RAM 3 x 36GB 15K U320 SCSI disks Now, I have read at the moment SRCDS only uses one core? So does that mean I should run non-HTT since I'll have 2 physical processors anyway? Is it worth me in the long-run using a Debian box with a VMware for Empires as Linux will probably be better in the future as it doesn't have any of the background overhead? Or what?
If you consider a friendly observation to not be on topic, fine. Your money, not mine. Server virtualization will only hurt performance. Leaving hyperthreading on shouldn't cause many issues, as we're moving to the OB soon (crosses fingers)
Well it's your "view" that the AUS servers are only full for four hours a day, when there is a distinct 7 hour time difference. I don't think you would be around at peak Australian times? Plus we are one of the AUS servers already. If there is no AUS servers then it will never get a community, we think Empires has great teamplay potential and so we are running a server. With the CPU limitations though we are looking at co-lo'ing a new box as EmpiresMod is very CPU intensive and will only be more-so when things like Aircrafts etc come into place. I was thinking of VMware as a means of an interim as I would prefer to use Linux. Also maybe Vmware can show the guest as having 1 CPU and distribute across multiple processors/cores on the host?
You'd be surprised when I'm awake. Being jobless between college and starting my new position in a few weeks has led me to hold the craziest hours. If you want to be able to distribute CPU usage, just set the affinity. I strongly discourage the use of server virtualization, especially if you are basing your OS on Linux. Its one thing if you use VMWare's custom OS as a base, its another thing if you use Linux to run VMWare server to run Windows. A linux server is not coming in the foreseeable future AFAIK due to OB issues? Maybe I'm wrong there.
Rothgar reading this topic might help (yes, isn't it weird?): " There will be no Linux 2.2 build until Valve releases needed files. "
Right and I guess no-one knows an ETA of when that will happen? On another note, I can't seem to get these vprof commands working, at least not through HLSW? Can you show me how these commands are supposed to be used? Thanks.
1. I don't know when 2. Just use these commands and you'll find out. You can try on local server if you have problems.
