I'm playing fine sans xcomutil. After the lets play I might use it for my own game though, there's a few problems with the game I wouldn't mind fixed.
well FYI every version of X com in existence has a bug where the difficulty is reset to beginner at the end of your first battle no matter what you originally set the difficulty to. Not a big issue if you played at beginner, but if you ever want to step up the difficulty, you can't without x com util. There's a few bugs that can even corrupt your save file that x com util fixes. FYI you can run xcomutil and it will mostly work with old saves. there's a handful of amazing UI tweaks, like one that saves your soldiers' equipment after the end of every battle, so you don't have to constantly re-equip everyone every single time you fight. IMO the balance changes are mostly shit except for the buff to the heavy laser, which honestly needed it, but like I said all the install options are easily customized when you run xcomutil for the first time.
I dont really have huge complaints about reassigning weapons. Except when one emp_recruit gets all 14 heavy plasma clips (what the fuck?)
well, I always have to reassign every single weapon every single time, so it's a big timesaver for me. anyway, this thread made me start up a new game of x com myself, so brb assaulting 2nd alien base (fuckers infiltrated australia, not that anyone cares except the kangaroos)
Steam Xcom works on 7, (IE, using DosBox) Versions which have been like, modified to run on XP (like Vess' link in the first thread) don't.
Dosbox will run any dos game on any platform, afaik. as long as you download the dos version you're good to go.
i run vesses version on 7 took some time making it work, but it runs smoothly now cant make it go windowed without crashing at random time intervals though
We found a base in the UK (no wonder they were pissed with us) And I raided it, to put it simply. And the attack went BRILLIANTLY. 1020 points, EXCELLENT rating, and our first encounter with mutons. Unfortunately, the screenshots fucked up so you can't see. Except this one shot, where foxy saves a recruits ass. Chalk another victory up for BHS! SFS on the other hand, had to deal with a snakeman terror mission. Their mission didn't go as well, especially since they had no access to armor yet. Overall their mission went surprisingly well, but no snakemen were caught alive. Blame the now dead Korpi for that. He wasted 3 stun bombs (those things are fucking hard to get) in reaction fire, and proceeded to get punched in the head by a zombie. And we lost like 3 recruits because of that mission. It was pretty harsh.
Foxy. Though Xcom tends to promote people for no real reason. Nobody's extremely high though, we only have 2 sergeants.
x com will continue to promote people who haven't done anything if they are the only people who are capable of being promoted. if you want a commander, all you have to do is recruit 30 people and fight a bunch of battles with them. they can be all complete trash, it doesn't matter. ranks are based on the number of soldiers you have (and basically nothing else), and commander = 30 soldiers. also, ranks don't mean anything about a soldier's abilities. a 'squaddie' can be much more of a badass than a commander.
