Every time i join a server it works for about a minute then lags out completely. My ping starts at about 100-150 then suddenly jumps to 999. It sometimes happens right after i join the server as well. I tried connecting the computer directly into the internet but it still lagged out. I've also tried disableding my firewall and antivirus. Can anyone help??? :confused:
Do you have steam friends overlay turned on? I had this same problem since the steam update on the 29th nov. Turning the friends overlay fixed it for me =o
Which servers have you tried, and were do you live? Does this always happen, without exceptions, on any server? Do you experience problems with your internet connection that is not empires related?
I've tried several clan servers and the offical server as well. I live in Canada. Yes, it always happened no matter with server, i'd lag out either right after joining or a few minutes into the game. And no my internet seems to be ok.
I'm with Rogers and for a while when loading TF2 I would get Mad lag for about a minute or two. Try waiting it out and seeing what happens. Who are you with and what plan do you have?
I'm with Sasket and high speed lite. And i only have HL2 (gift subscription) Edit: Waiting out doesn't work either, it just sits there with a 996 ping.
If it works at the start then I'd guess it'd be a software thing, like you said, a firewall or something. Sorry, you've tried everything that I can think of off the top of my head.
Use net_graph 3 to view your stats. Is your choke high? I had to turn steam friends off totally to get my choke down to normal. With steam friends on, my choke was 100+. Steam > Settings > Friends > Uncheck "Automatically sign into friends" - see if that works.
already did that...I also just uninstalled norton internet security (because the subsciption is over) and there was no difference. I made my own server and i didn't lag at all so maybe it could my ISP?
When you lag in game - is it just a high ping, or do you get choke? In the console type in net_graph 3 to see if you have choke. (or is it net_graph 2, try both.)
What are your rates with http://speedtest.net ? Maybe your low speed connection can't handle your current rates, you could try changing your rates. Niarbeht should be able to help you, he has 56k. Net_graph 3 is what I use.
how do i bring up the console (yes i'm a newb to hl2) and the ping is a little high since i'm on my old PC with crappy wi-fi but it should be around that speed minus the ping

I think your test you posted alone shows why you have some lag - even if you real ping is lower, its still 400ms - which puts you in dial up range. What is your average ping to game servers?
Ouch. That speed is really hurting. If you didn't try anything else and find success, try these rates I just threw together. cl_cmdrate 50 cl_updaterate 20 rate 10000 ex_interp -0.01 These should work well for someone with a connection like that.
well it kinda works now. My ping only jumps to 557ms but still unplayable since everyone just freezes.
