    Hey everybody!

I've noticed there's a lot of new players around, and even old players don't always remember every map. Suggestion is simple - instead of the usual emp_ prefix on infantry maps, use inf_. This way you can tell which game mode the map is just by the name.

This would in part be work needing to be done by server owners, what with all the unofficial maps.

    Thoughts?

not that the general idea is bad, but this is a lot of work for things people learn rather quick anyway. you cant simply rename maps, it breaks cubemaps and you cant just recreate cubemaps, you have to first remove them from the bsp and then start the map twice and change hdr settings inbetween. then theres all the resource files like for minimap or the actual res files and whatnot.

I was not aware of this... that is very unfortunate. Figured the res files etc. could likely be renamed fairly easily but the cubemaps would be a lot of work.

From Valve's Developer Community Wiki on Cubemaps:
If the map bsp file is renamed after the cubemaps have been built the cubemaps will no longer work and default to the sky cubemap. You must rebuild cubemaps again each time a map is renamed. However, the no-longer-working cubemaps are not removed, so this can lead to bloated files. If you plan to release a map so that others can download it, it is best to try to avoid any map-renaming after you compile it, to avoid problems.

i mean this should have been done from the start, prefexing maps with their gamemode is rather intuitive. but gamemodes never got much love seems, the differentiaton is rather weak. most dont even know the names - classic (comm maps), conquest (escort) and theres a 3rd one (district) i tend to forget. :D
i wonder if there is a real differnce in code, i mean in the end its "classic" mode when you have two comm vehicles - but you could have flags and tickets and no res-nodes and not enough space to build, so not very classic in the end. its all rather vague.

anyways, i also think, if, it should be emp_<mode>_<mapname>.

I doubt this would be much of an issue if the map vote prevents people from regularly voting for infantry maps and also prevents them from being played when lots of people are on the server (>20).

I really like this idea. At the very least the stock maps could be renamed to include the appropriate prefix.
