Can we include all the decent custom maps in the installers so newbs don't quit during the download?

In order for this to be possible, the "good enough to be stock" complex has to go; that being said, most of the custom maps that people like are as good as some of the stock maps...

I can't think of many maps that deserve this or get played enough.

The "deserve" part just needs to go Empty. Who cares if they "deserve" it or not? As long as they aren't total junk, put them in so servers can start running them on their rotation.

Okay that's fair enough, but really, they're played so often that people will have them downloaded anyway.

It's all the shitty maps that take 20 minutes to download and aren't even that fun that are scaring people away, can we remove these really crappy maps from rotation.

You'd be surprised how many times I look at the scoreboard and half the server is still downloading. It doesn't take much to put the maps in, and doing so would resolve an irritating problem we've had for years.

I'll have to take a look.

Lawliet and I made a new map pack but I forgot to release. I should probably update it and release. Also, no. Installer is bigger than every other source game as it is. When we have steam content delivery, then yes, we can start thinking about adding many more maps, but until then, it's simply not an option when we use an installer.

You realize how small maps compress with bz2 compression? It's a few megabytes even for maps like midbridge. Most people have high speed internet these days, a megabyte or two just doesn't matter.

castle had a problem with a texture missing because a letter in the filepath was capitalized in the res file.

A few MB is a fair amount recon.

What you're trying to optimize for is a one time scenario per map for everyone. If the server is configured right, they have a proper FTP download location; if they DON'T have that, hell - I'll even provide them with one off my own personal hosting.

They download the map once and it's done. Work shouldn't be done to optimize for the one time or rare scenarios. I'm with Trickster there.

Also, [sarcasm with a tinge of dislike] Midbridge, last I played, was a mess[/sarcasm with a tinge of dislike]

Again: if there are servers out there that have no proper download set up (forget the name of the setting) and are having people DL from the server itself, I'd be happy to lend them my own hosting to download. Valve implemented that functionality for just this reason.

Empires cup is fun after a few rounds of canyon, dust storm, cyclopean etc... just it needs to be fixed.
