Make squad select window pop up when joining a team. We have like 5-6 newbs and noobs who are squadless at proper games.
That's not really a bad idea. If we had some man power we could also redo the dialog to make it more obvious on how to use. We could also not let the user quit the dialog until they pick a squad.
People would be less likely to pick skills of their own accord if they automatically got them, they'd just think that's what normally happens. Also, how do you decide what skills should be the default? The 4 you state are utter crap, especially in that order. On an engineer, none of those skills are useful, repair upgrade or revive should always be the first skill taken (and it's highly subjective which is more important too, meaning one could be horribly wrong under certain circumstances)
Request move to "Under Construction" if this is being taken up. It's fine if noobs don't pick their skills of their own accord, let them learn how to select skills over time. I wouldn't say most of them are highly subjective if it were this: Engineer - Repair Upgrade (because there are always buildings to build, except maybe Revive on Conquest maps) Grenadier - Defusal (main skill of the class) Rifleman - Damage Increase/Dig In (debatable) Scout - Hide (main skill of the class) All default skills should be kept Class Specific. Why? It teaches new players to play their class. Engineers learn to build; Grenadiers learn how to tank and defuse; Riflemen learn how to kill; and Scouts learn how to... well scout.
Main as in defusing mines is the same as sabotaging for scouts. It's also a must-have for certain maps and definitely mid to late game on a popular server. The only other one would be Ammo Upgrade, but the theme is to assign a class one of their class-specific skills so they become better at playing their class instead of playing like an FPS player.
I always take accuracy on Engie. Then proceed to gun down everyone with smg2 who tries to spawn while I kill their barracks.
I think I've poorly communicated the core reason to have default skills. The bottom line is to get the player something (anything) that can be useful in case they leave their skill slots empty. There are multiple instances in which a skill slot might be blank. The first is that a noob didn't know to pick skills. In this case, we just want to give the poor fella a chance to learn the game without dying constantly. The noob isn't performing a delicate strategy, he's just fucking around. He needs survive. Extra health and speed help with survivability. Accuracy might help a bit if he gets into a fight. The second instance is when an experienced player forgets to assign skills after gaining a new rank. I do it all the time. In this case, I wouldn't minding just filling the slot with anything because anything is better than nothing. This would not replace manually choosing skills, just make sure that people never go into the field with wasted skill slots.
