This is so awesome. The full effect is best when compared to the diagrams of what we though it looked like:

To what it actually looks like:

Although it's not that surprising considering they are drawn like that because that's how they would look if you assume all the atoms repulse one another, which they do, which is why things have size.

But yes it's nice to see that people can get budgets to build machines which produce the same image you'd get if you ran the emboss and gaussian blur filters over a molecule diagram.

Why am I not surprised you're underwhelmed? Man, I have never seen someone more cynical than I.

Actually I was being serious, I am very happy that people can get funding for this sort of thing.

I'm not amazed because I know how clever science is, so when it does something clever it's hard to be amazed because it's consistently been doing that for a century or two.

But I like that people are building things I can see no practical application for, it's like art, except more expensive, and bigger, and with flashing lights on it.

I like people doing things just because they can. It's one of the most marvellous human abilities I know of.

I thought you were going to say something about pure vs practical science, and that its good that there if funding for pure science, although im sure there will be some usefulness for this. The thing is, what seems like pure science today may eventually have some usefulness. Machines like the LHC might lead to fusion reactors for example. Im rambling about cool science stuff yay.

Me too.. Its really incredible and I love what it does to religion. All this nasa stuff I think is a little too much for now and I think we should dig deeper with in our own world until we get more tech to go out in space to learn more.

    Humans are germs.

Personally, I don't think we spend nearly enough on space flight. I mean, space is the next step for humanity. Space holds infinite resources, colonizable worlds, possibly(most likley) new life forms.

As for getting more tech, we already have some incredible new tech. A machine that converts rocks into usable air/materials using very little electricity(very little), a new form of engine which would cut an 8-month long trip from earth to mars into one that is only around 1-2 months.

I want to start seeing these applications used :<

Yeah I guess I don't really know enough about the tech nasa has, but I do think it would be cheaper/safer to look into smaller things rather then larger. If that makes sense.

But yeah obviously were gonna have to abandon this planet eventually and spread out enough until whatever our universe's protector/doctor/white blood cells wipe us all out.

He's probably going on about how small we are in the grand scheme of things.

I like how it took you five days to come up with that clever joke. Keep up the great work!

    Good luck getting there.
That's why we do all this other stuff, the crazy junkies sit in their vans figuring out teleportation and the rest of the scientists try to keep the rest of us alive or research things which may end up useful later.
