Can't you also dump the demo into a series of .tga files? It works something like an actual renderer, so the resultant video has no FPS problems. (Found here.) Have every player start recording a demo at the start of the match, and you're set!
Yes, Dumbster that's possible. If you're going to make such .avi please use DivX or XviD for compression. It'll be easier for people to watch.
Don't forget that fraps kills your FPS. Does the demo recording work similiar to the battlerecorder in BF2? i.e. it records all the information of what is going on at the time so you can essentially spectate in the same game afterwards? That would be fantastic for recording video promo footage from it.
That's generally how it works. There are usually some quircks in the demoplayback with some mods though, I hope Empires isn't one of them.
Yes, demo recording works. (at least for me) Just playdemo <name> after you copied and unzipped it and you can watch it.

I've recorded several matches in the demo format. I've never had any problems watching them. It even records the commander position just fine for me. (However it doesn't show you doing anything on the menu. Just what you place and where you look.) Best part is how small the demos are even over long recoding times.
I once played Burnout with my mates and the exciting and screaming could overshadow the FIFA games any day Thats whats exciting in live games, you don't know where its gonna go :D
