So when the new update came around I, like many, couldn't get Empires to work. I was lucky and was able to fix it by just running Source SDK Base 2007 once to generate the hl2.exe file.

Then the "quick-fix "was released and forced to install on my copy of Empires, which is the EmpiresLauncher.exe file. This exe has blocked any and all attempts to start my game of Empires.

This is basically what happens when I try launching Empires:
    1. Launch Empires
    2. "hl2.exe not found bla bla bla run SDK 2007" click OK
    3. SDK 2007 runs, generates hl2.exe
    4. close SDK 2007
    5. Launch Empires
    6. Goto step 2

I have tried/done all of the following and nothing has worked, so please don't suggest to me otherwise:

    • batch file (worked once, but game crashed 5 seconds later)
    • verify Empires
    • verify SDK Base 2007
    • reinstall SDK Base 2007
    • reinstall Empires
    • copy Empires to username folder
    • copy Empires to common folder
    • copy SDK Base 2007 to common folder

Any way around this? I can actually verify that the hl2.exe file is generated when the SDK Base 2007 is run.
If there is a way to uninstall the EmpiresLauncher patch and still be able to play without that patch, I think that would solve my problem.

Do you have 2 different user folders in Steamapps?

Just hang tight until the next patch (hopefully within a week, if not considerably less) and then see if you still get the problem.

I'm in the same boat as Ed here. Go through all of the steps he had, except now I'm at the point where
    MountAppFilesystem() failed:
error 5: No Steam Content Servers are available

Didn't want a new thread because Trix will tell me the one step solution to solve my retardation, I'm sure.

If it's not fixed after the patch, then I'll look at it closer. But with quite a few launch-related fixes added, I'm reluctant to really spend time on something that's more than likely fixed. Just hang tight a week or so. Everything in the next patch is committed now, we just need to do some testing before we push it out.

If you want to help though, upgrade to the beta version via Steam. This should let you know whether we have fixed the issue or not.

In the current version, Empires needs to be installed on the same drive as Source SDK Base 2007. If not, you'll get that error message.

This is fixed in the next version.

    i fixed it
    1. copy common/empires folder to username folder
    2. erase redist, empireslauncher, empireslauncher.exe, installscript.vdf from the USERNAME FOLDER
    3. find the empires gcfs and place them where they usually go (i copied mine from my desktop computer to laptop)
might be somewhat redundant but who cares

Yeah idk why the GCFs are even still there, the files are actually empty.
