I have 2 1TB hard drives in my computer, 1 1TB and 1 2TB external drives. I record to the secondary internal 1TB drive and store on it, moving it to one of the secondary drives once it's encoded. I run FRAPS in full 1080p lossless RGB mode because I love my placebos.
Check TechBargains.Com and press "Storage". They have a Seagate USB 3.0 3 Terabyte HD for $100 with Free Shipping, and 2 Terabyte for $60. Note USB 3.0 will plug into USB 2.0 and run at USB 2.0 transfer rates, in addition to USB 3.0 at much higher transfer rates. My HD is a 7200RPM internal SATA Terabyte HD. The external USB 3.0 Three Terabyte HD is hooked up via USB 2.0 since my system is a fairly old Laptop. As long as it continues to work without issue, I won't upgrade. Except I would like to fix the sound record issue and that may drive my buying a gaming machine. The USB 3.0 connection is close to SATA in speed - 5 GB a second. USB 2.0 HS is rated for 480 but since I know this shit extemely well, you'd be lucky to get half that speed. It is an error correcting protocol that has alot of waste. USB 3.0 is much more efficient and more like a network protocol. Not as much polling as USB 2.0. So buy USB 3.0 or ESata drives - the value seems to be USB 3.0 though. If you only have USB 2.0 connection - use it for storage and some day you'll get USB 3.0 and can record directly to it. PS: I used to write 4.8 GB to DVD's for backup. Then I did the math and buying a 3 terabyte HD was alot cheaper than .25 cent DVD's and alot more convenient. I have a few 1 terabyte HD's that sit idle since I haven't filled the 3 terabyte yet. 3 terabytes is 640 DVD's which may be 90% full. One large storage space is more efficient and faster - even at USB 2.0 speeds. If you say HD is $130 that is about 20 cents per DVD size storage space. $100 is 15.6 cents per DVD.
Once you get to the level of eSata and USB 3.0 speeds, the bottleneck is really at the hard drive write speed anyway. The RPM of the drive is entirely irrelevant, there are some 5400 RPM drives that will write faster than 7200 RPM drives. The idea of using writeable DVDs is laughable. At the same time, I don't get why you'd ever buy an external HD enclosure with the HD already included. They use terrible low quality drives with piss poor write speeds. You buy a good hard drive, a decent enclosure and put it in yourself, or you just buy a decent drive and mount it internally. Either way, avoid the shitty drives they package with external enclosures. Protip - They're shitty.
Oh wait, I also had some issues with sound. But I dont exactly remember how I fixed it. But I think that was a codec issue. Ever tryed using MSI afterburner and playing with settings like: Enable MJPG decoder, Changing to stereo mix/rip? I know I was messing around there while trying to fix it...but I think my fix was installing some weird codec. Just try messing around there with those settings (make sure you download the LATEST BETA) I know your issue might most probably be something else, but might be worth trying. Try re/installing k-lite codecs. (Its also possible that your codecs are conflicting, so you might also try un/reinstalling any other codecs) and as second option I would also try this http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ffdshow.htm Oh btw, I think the audio was set wrong as default in dxtory for me(I think I had it set to my digital output and maybe even the audio recording was unchecked)....you could also mess around with dxtory audio settings...even if you dont plan to use it (just for trying to find why is your sound not recording) Tell me more about your sound issue. Put your recorded file into VLC and go to playlist - select your video - details(or info)....and write what kind of audio is it recording (if it is recording any at all...but if it is and you cant hear it, its most probably the codec issue) And BTW: What does it really mean when somebody writes that speed of the disc is 5GB a second? Because while benchmarking Write speed, you are most probably not gonna be able to reach 100mb/s So I Guess its reading speed only? (wasnt ever really looking on reading speeds) Just like trickster said: I got 2 7200rpm...one is doing about 70mb/s and the other is 90mb/s write speed. EDIT: After benchmarking, one is 35mb/s and the other one is 80mb/s (average) to be precise. (TIP: Defragment your free space with Auslogics Disk Defrag) I second that. heh kinda messy post, sorry
*bump for more discussion* Test clip 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8uSBNVBpRw Test clip 2 - http://youtu.be/xV5GmtT8FcM https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en 1st clip has a variable bit rate (12,000,000 bps - 24,000,000 bps and 1920x1080 resolution 2nd clip has a constant bit rate (5,000,000 bps) and 1920x1072 resolution Now as far as I know I can't really record any fraps footage with my labtop since it has nvidia optimus. I got lucky with this recording since I didn't lose many frames off of 30 (a loss of 2-3 frames at most). If anyone knows how to fix the fraps issue with nvidia optimus let me know. I'll post a 3rd clip as soon as I have it uploaded. Edit: Sticky this moderator. This is a great thread. Edit2: 3rd Test Clip - http://youtu.be/eszG_RivrPo (might still be uploading) Full 1920x1080 resolution, 50,000 constant bit rate, 512kbps audio bitrate, 96 khz
Here is the issue with my sound: https://frapsforum.com/threads/problems-with-audio-recording.2609/ I went through the process to setup the mixer and fix, but then no sound worked. I should have spent more hours working on it - but decided to yank it and go without the ability to record games (Boo Hoo). Too bad, I can edit and make them fairly interesting, then I'd stalk players from SPEC view and do some decent training videos. But until I pull the trigger on buying a new system - or figure a way to rig it to record, I am sadly just a playa and not a contributor. I'd love to see some more vids from Silk, Neoony, and eventually from Freaknovich, Teef, Scrat, Kyro... Those guys are proof that ONE player makes a big difference. Newbs will follow - but until that ONE player joins, they tend to cower in the Rax, waiting to die. Also - PLEASE tell me why your videos are not listed here? http://www.empiresmod.com/drupal/node/11
Just bought new graphic card (XFX Ati 7970 3GB) so I can finally record even the newest games modded over limits in full hd with 30+ fps. (empires is still going pretty bad though) Also new HD (Seagate ST2000DM001 2 TB) and Iam really surprised with its speed of about 140 MB/s (write) And I would really like to make some emp videos before the empires gets more boring than it currently is (missing too many players ). [Yes, it actually started being boring for me  , but iam still not saying that Iam done with it] Lately its getting pretty hard to get into some fun rounds in my limited freetime. Also, I wish for some organised games. Would support that with anything I could. Thx for that, it really motivates me :D and thats what I currently need the most
The only videos you will see of me is pretending to be Voldemort, and obssessing over tricksters face. There was video I recorded of me printing out his steam avatar picture and had my penis go in and out of the sheet of papers mouth. It was too much, so I just fed him butter through my monitor instead.
Neoony - post those vids and post links somewhere here so we can learn. I was watching Nostalgic Nonsense the other night - wow, he cranks too. Teef - I would expect no less, you sick bastard.
I am using DXTORY, havn't looked back. A legit version. Good thing Yen was so weak that 3,500 yen was 32USD and not 40USD that I feared. =p
I compel this thread to be... REBORN MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA - *ahem*. So I attempted to record using method described by silk. Took demo recording of a 4v4 round of escort from earlier today (not the whole round, just the first half really). Went through the demo recording until I found a moment I thought was somewhat amusing, and then recorded it and edited it up. Compressed via virtualdub, exactly as Silk did. Here is the result. Only 13 seconds (didn't want to take time to record whole thing with fraps). Looks pretty good to me, what about you guys?
Ya - very good - 720P works for me. Don't listen to these 60fps 1080p snobs. Who needs more than 720p for a cartoon anyway? Sound was good too. I won't give away the ending - it's worth waiting for.
No bloom, and I'm just getting familiarized with all this stuff so could somebody explain to me what 'HDR' is? I didn't gleam anything from a google search. As for the aspect ratio, I had the game at 1680x1050 and recorded it as such. Compressed exactly as described in silk's document. I dunno if I need to put it at a different ratio or what, but it seems perfectly normal looking to me.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-dynamic-range_rendering From what I know, HDR looks terrible in empires. Go to your video settings in empires and there u can change it, also the bloom. I would personally recommend turning them both off. You have 16:10 aspect ratio. Most people have 16:9 and they will see black bars on the sides of your video.
