So um... I write dumb shit on paper to fuel my creative juices. And kinda want to make a landscape, and have a visual of what im writing about to have a better description. How big can these go? UE thingy
oh man i cant wait to kick your asses in such enviroments (even if we probably wont reach the shown fidelity) ove: according to kylegar 20kmx20km without streaming, with streaming as big as you can create it in a lifetime

k, not 20km, still far bigger then neccessary for a game like empires. (according to this site bandar dessert from bf3 is aproximately 5km², bit over 2km each side)
Just on a side note, since it was mentioned in the video I linked: This also looks really interesting: http://www.world-machine.com/
you can also try out Vue (there's a PLE capable to export all sorts of maps like height, splat and vegetation. no clue how easy its to reimport, for unity i had to write my own tools and thats where i stopped and considered it useless for the purpose of vast open terrains)
You can google image some rocks, make a heightmap out of it and turn that into a map. You can do a n y t h i n g
Those posts were made before they released Large World support in 4.6 https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/INT/Support/Builds/ReleaseNotes/2014/4_6/index.html So, yes, 20km is possible since we are on 4.7
Let's make a huge race track that takes 45 minutes to complete, and call it emp_prime I'm so on it you guys
It's also just shy of 3x larger than a Planetside 2 continent. Honestly, I don't think we'll ever touch that. Even 5kmx5km might be too large.
Do note however that noone says it all has to be populated. Might use some of that space for some scenery that looks a bit better than your typical source skybox.
Thought I'd bump this topic to hit on a point that hasn't been made yet - the popularity and success of the new Insurgency, which uses "Source 2013" just like EmpiresMod. It integrates extremely nicely with Steamworks and is very easy to hop on and start playing. Valve has already ported over Dota 2, TF2, Left 4 Dead 2, Counter-Strike, and even Half Life 3 from Source 2013 to Source 2 (evidence), so you'll be damned sure they made it easy on themselves. This is speculative, but I'll bet this means that any Source 2013 mod/game will be fairly simple to port over to Source 2. Hint hint.
