The default for this is 3 seconds. I implore all server admins to reduce this value significantly. I would suggest a value of 0.5 since even GIGAR can get his bearings half a second after spawning. At the moment it is ridiculous, with immortal god-warriors spawning in APCs and steamrolling any opposition within 3 seconds distance. I hear wind that spawn protection on APCs is being removed, but the cvar (assuming it works, of course) should be able to remedy this in the short term and prevent the current level of faggotry on escort whereby an apc rushed the flag and everyone spawns in it at the last second. This tactic is getting so overused now that the map is barely playable as NF if the Brenodi have a single knowledgeable player. I suppose this would qualify as a whine, but it's such an easy fix for a problem so many people agree on that I can't really see any argument against it.
I'm in the same boat as Demented... I guess I just never bothered to notice and was more focused on stopping the enemy's ability to spawn instead of observing how soon/late they can die after spawning. The thought never crossed my mind, tbh... I've spawned and had people kill me relatively instantly so I guess a lot of servers I play on simply have nothing set for that variable. *shrug*
Its especially bad in APC's. One guy jumped out of an apc on escort and seriously 10 people fired on him while he spammed nades and fired his rifle. He got like 5 kills before his protection wore off.
spawn protection really should be enough just to let people get out of their barracks alive, it should never allow them to have invulnerability vs attackers. All servers except training server should just remove it tbh, especially KM.
We have, it is set to zero. That doesn't stop: a) people telling us it should be set to anything from 0.5 to 3 b) people telling us it's currently set to something other than 0 Presumably the maps have overrides in some cases that mean that is is non-zero but for final reference, it is and will stay set to zero.
I dont think you can set it specifically in a map file... More likely its hardcoded to have a default minimum that will always apply no matter how low you set it on the server config.
Yesterday I asked Flame111 while playing on the server and he didn't agree with you. I have to look at the code to make sure that you can totally remove spawn protection with the cvar.
i have no idea why there's spawn protection anyway. to stop people sitting in the barracks and killing you as soon as you spawn? other than that being one of the only ways to stop engineers spawning and pumping a load of health back into the barracks and killing you, it's also bloody easy just to change to rifleman and kill the guy yourself. oh no, you wasted 7 seconds respawning. i guarentee it'll waste him more than 60 seconds getting to that place from his base.
The only place where I could see spawn protection as being needed are maps with a fixed spawn. On maps with just raxes, if someone can get inside your rax and position themselves to spawn-camp you, they could probably just as easily blow the building up, so it's sort of a moot point.
