Really like this one, I'll look into it.

This is what I originally had in mind, however the standard HL2 props are very strange: There are only three sets of tracks, and none seem to join eachother! Maybe I'll have to go back to HL2:SP and see how they did it there.

Yeah, this sounds good. At the moment, the NF don't really have a reason for being there. With the dropship I've added now, the Brenodi look like they've just crash-landed, but the NF still don't have a real presence. Maybe they could be using the area for supplies like you said, not sure about the prisoners idea though, the area is a little too remote for that.

Sounds good, more props are definately needed. Just make sure that you're using standard gauge! (i.e. they fit on the existing tracks)

Just stack 2 tracks on each other for joining tracks.

so here's a slightly updated version.

Still having some trouble with displacements meeting the ground, but this is only a cosmetic issue. A lot of the standard HL2 stuff in the shed is going to be replaced with NF crates and such.

I tried out the crane and containers idea, but it just didn't seem to fit right. I think it's a bit too large scale for such a small town.

It may be a good time to mention that if you're doing anything involving a railroad in the Empires universe, it should have a gauge of 10m - the trains are quite large. The inspiration is this monstrosity:

Pants. lol. Never mind. Seeing as there are no current train/track props that fit with the empires universe, I'll leave it as it is at the moment. It is only a custom map after all, so doesn't have to fit the story as well as the official ones. Maybe once more content is created I might update it for continuity's sake.

I'm working on compiling a final version now, with different snow textures (displacement problem is still there, annoyingly). Then I just need to make the overhead map and that should be it.

okay kids, this is the first real release. From here on, the only changes I'm going to make is possibly updated props, should more become available in the future.

    Here's a few screenies first:

And here's the download URL: http://rapidshare.de/files/20532908/emp_railroad.zip.html (4515 KB)
Everything required should be in the ZIP.

Hope you enjoy it, I certainly enjoyed making it.

    Checking it out now...

    First impressions - Whee! Slidey!
It's a nice map, I would say that it's a bit frustrating to roll your com vehicle all the way down the starting slope as BE and it being insanely difficult to get it back up.
    Also... what is this? [IMG]
(the red cross where the crosshair should be)
It's also fairly dark and hard to see in the central houses.

Another point...did you try driving a 3phase jeep around? It's MENTAL... The first time I ever did a front flip :D
    Edit:
    Whee!

    That's mental! Lol.
The red cross-hair signifies a no-build area (for engineers, at least). This is to stop engineers spamming the flag with walls / turrets.

I found the comm vehicles really aren't very good at going up slopes, but this is the drawback of having such a highly defendable position: if you're gonna go down the slope, you have to be prepared to stay down there.

    Now your geting somwhere! :D

http://img437.imageshack.us/my.php?image=emprailroad00329vh.jpg <-- that one especialy is really promising, abit more work on the edges of that traintrack thing and you have a actuall snowy looking track!

http://img437.imageshack.us/my.php?image=emprailroad00282gg.jpg <-- that one is also alot nicer then the first pictures, but the edges of the building coud use some more snowstacks to show that it's been there and that the snow has been there for a while

another thing you coud look into is rescaling and rotating the texture on the traintrack base a bit so that it's not so obviusly repeting

other then that, keep up the good work!
this is looking better and better!

It looks like a normal transportation van, which is/was in civilian use. I think one could have found many of these in the cities of the Brenodi Empire about 15-20 years ago. Probably much more common in the Northern Faction, in where the economical circumstances have led to using mostly just old models.

Maybe adding a bit more cover/hills/mountains around the Village could spice this map up?
