Okay here's the deal, I can make ammo boxes passable for 2.25 This means two things. First, no hiding behind them because bullets will pass right on through. Second, you can place a building on top of an existing ammo box. Do you want? Majority gets their way. Next chance will be version after.
Huh. There's no easy way to make it so they're only passable for the purposes of placing buildings, and still block movement / bullets and everything else, is there? Oh well. I suppose this solves most of the problems people have with ammo boxes without breaking anything else.
Well, I quit empires forever. If I cant play NF and have my gay ammo crate of 120 seconds of invincibility I quit.
If we're talking 2.25, yes, this is the only option. It's too late to add a more complex feature and properly test/debug it. It's this or leave it along and focus on next version. Either way the version after can have an improvement, but I'm talking about short term fix.
Personally i like the ability to drop an ammo box for quick cover, also useful for a little step up to get on a box that isn't jump able on without using a turret to get up to (like on escort) plus you can't spam it, so having it block is good.
I would like them to no longer block buildings(unless they can be destroyed as sugested in another thread). I don't mind them blocking bullets though.
Relatedly, can you move the ammo and healthboxes in the armory to the dead center instead of immediately adjacent to a wall? Logistically speaking, it would at least double yield and keep people from Stooging up the armory.
Destroying an enemy crate with melee is a better solution. Shouldn't be hard to implement. OnTakeDamage and see if damageinfo is a melee weapon. If so remove the crate.
Here's an idea: when a commander places a building, instead of waiting for players/cameras/tanks/turrets/ammo crates to go away, the building creates a massive amount of damage that instantly destroys whatever it is placed on.
And we can look at that for next version. 2.25 is too close to be adding things, we both know that. This is a compromise. Plus we'll get to see how it plays out when ammo boxes don't work as cover, community may end up liking that more. @all Remember, aggressive release schedule, so we're not talking about living with this for a year, more like 2-3 months.
I vote no for the compromise, I do like the idea behind it, but being able to shoot through a solid object is just another one of those "need to know" gameplay elements which logically doesn't make any sense. The blocking structures isn't a big enough problem IMHO to have it become shoot through, which is something that will be much more common in your average game. I don't think it's necessarily bad to be able to shoot through it, gameplay wise that is, however, I do see it as a big con intuitively (as in familiarity). With that said I would conclude that the downside to it is far greater than the upside, so again, I vote no.
