bah... When minecraft came out it was already better then DF. You are IN the world instead of looking down at it.
Although dwarf fortress does allow for rather more fun in the engineering department. Minecraft doesn't let you build entrance halls which flood with magma at the push of a button, drowning hundreds of heavily armed goblins in lava and melting their flesh off, as well as any of their non-iron items, then pushing another button and having the hall drain off into a grated collection chamber which filters out all the remaining, valuable, iron objects, which your dwarves then haul off into the loot pile, pull the levers to refill the lava tanks, then start eating in the freshly lava-cleaned hall again until the next siege. There's something pleasant about building a trap that can commit minor genocide, sort loot, and clean the blood off itself afterwards.
What are you talking about... you can do that with minecraft too. not using lava though... just drowning the enemy.
No you can't because 1. Minecraft doesn't send hundreds of goblins after your base. 2. Minecraft doesn't have fluid physics. 3. Minecraft operates on a rather smaller scale than dwarf fortress. 4. Minecraft doesn't let you control a bunch of dwarves. 5. Minecraft doesn't model flesh melting, or let you steal the loot off everyone you kill, down to the !!xtroll fur loinclothx!! if necessary. Everything in DF is basically four to eight times the size it is in minecraft. Also DF lets you use water pressure to kill people with the impact of water ejecting from the base of a giant reservoir. Minecraft doesn't let you do that.
I kill armies with newtonian mechanics. It's like being the only person in medieval europe who has A levels in science.
I don't even see the code anymore, I just see dragon, burning dwarf, masterwork platinum table covered in dwarf blood. It's almost part of the fun, really. Pictures kind of get in the way, whereas I look at that and what I see is a road leading up to a vast cliff face dotted with tiny windows and chimneys and arrow slits, with an enormous gate in the centre, next to a vast heap of garbage on the right and a small marketplace on the left. Also my imagination renders everything like boris vallejo for some reason.
