So i wanted to try out Empires again, however every time i try to get in a game (whether) i try create my own server, start the tutorial or just join a server, the game crashes with the famous "engine error" saying something along the line of an internal driver error and that i might be out of OS Paged Pool Memory so yeah can only see the nice main menu in empires, not actually play it. I tried to increase my page file size already (as well as adding a page file on my D drive alongside the one on C), trying going in and editing the PagedPoolSize in the registry. Tried removing my pagefile, restart comp and add it back in and restart again. tried delete empires and redownload and maybe more things i forgot, but nothing of it worked so far my specs (would ahve including a dxdiag, but either my post get to long if i post it in post in code tags, or the file is too big to attach..., so just posting the part with my specs then) Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.101209-1647) Language: Danish (Regional Setting: Danish) System Manufacturer: INTEL_ System Model: D945PVS_ BIOS: Default System BIOS Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz (2 CPUs) Memory: 2046MB RAM Page File: 1130MB used, 6904MB available Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
again if i zip them all together it gets WAY over the size you allows (fills 744KB), the mdmp's in general lies around 85-180KB and you only allow 97.7KB zip's and not mdmp's without zipping
well didn't had, but okay created a dropbox now sounded kinda nice to have, so here is a zip with all the mdmp's in it http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36400040/empires-mdmp.zip
not sure is Left 4 Dead 2 source? that one at least works perfectly (don't have TF2 installed ATM don't really get what ppl find so fun in it...)
yes, L4D2 is source and uses a newer SDK than empires. Even though asking this is retarded: what graphics carp do you have? I think empires in particular only works with gfx cards that are 9.0 (or higher) since 2 updates ago. You may also check if your Pentium4 really supports SSE2. It should, but there are so many older CPUs out there labeled P4 that there migt be a difference.
Recently I went back to xp and been crashing a lot. Its been about a year of using vista. Xp stuff is slowly coming back to me. Things you could try are 1. put page file on a septate drive or portion then your Operating system. 2. update your bios. 3. check your power settings 4. Turn down hardware acceleration for graphics and sound. 5. try some beta graphics drivers. 6. disable hardware not being used as it just eats power and creates more heat. "his seems to be a problem with the D945PVS. They come with a weak power supply."
WTF... a copy-paste of specs from dxdiag don't give that info... weird... anyway is a ATI redeon X1650 ehmm not even sure what SSE2 means and thus obviously wouldn't know where to check that as said i put a page file on BOTH my C and D now (OS being on C) this is rahter advanced stuff to do so far i know and not really something i would be comfortable doing myself what you mean exactly with "power settings" again not to sure how to do that geuss i could try if all else fails prefer if possible to use full releases of such things only though welll had to swap my PSU some time ago, since it plain out stopped working seem to be a PLC model:LC6350 (350W) PSU i got currently
disable page file on c It is just like updating a driver. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...ndows XP Professional*&DownloadType=BIOS#help Sorry I forgot not everyone has that added feature. Basically check your hardware settings to make sure no devices are in a power saving mode. click "start menu" then "run" type "dxdiag" then click "ok" Under video you should have the options to disable features. under sound you should have the option of changing sound acceleration. Another option is when starting your PC go into the BIOs and disable onboard sound. A lot of times beta works better with XP as it is a dead system. companies don't want to go threw the trouble of the Microsoft driver verification. So they just release beta drivers. you may also want to try removing xfire to see if that is maybe conflicting with steam
PLEASE DO NOT READ mcthuggs POSTS! (He's an idiot and no one here likes him.) I don't think your pagefile has anything to do with this and updating a bios on a properly functioning machine is just plain retarded, unless you are a nerdy nerd that enjoys to do such things. About SSE2: Wikipedia CPU-Z is a little tool that gives loads of information about CPU and other HW. Download CPU-Z here Your screen needs to show a 2 there to be able to play empires.
Who knows your motherboard better then the people who made it ? They release updates for a reason. Page file a separate portion or drive is recommended by Microsoft. Microsoft : "When you put a paging file on its own partition, the paging file does not become fragmented, and this counts as another definite advantage. If a paging file resides on a partition that contains other data, it may experience fragmentation as it expands to satisfy the extra virtual memory that is required. An unfragmented paging file leads to faster virtual memory access and to a greater chance of a dump-file capture that is free of significant errors." source http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314482 So Wookie is WRONG Page file on your operating portion may lead to more crashes. Just a pointer....page file initial and max should be set to 1.5 x your total ram
