I have no idea if this has been suggested before.

But how about cannon turrets in the game?
Kinda like the ones in Red Alert.

Maybe they could be quite expensive, and take awhile to build.

Therefore they'd only be used for defense and not offense.
Well I don't know.. Something that just popped up in my head.

Actually I was gonna suggest a large ML/MG turret, kinda like the GDI one in C&C: Renegade, but I figured it'd be quite pointless seeing as there already are MG and ML turrets available... :P

I like variety, but not turret farms. I don't like turret farms because they requre artillery to take them down, and I don't like artillery that much (let's not get into that). If we have an even more powerful turret, more artillery would be required thus increasing the lack of tank and infantry battles (which I like more). Therefore, I guess i'm against this idea, though I do appreciate the variety it would offer

The cannon turret could be big as a refinery, and perhaps requiring a player to operate it? The cannon would be very powerful, but it's downside would be that it's static.

I dont see why there should be a static artillery cannon.

And you should remove all the Artillery Shells on that cannon, it seems to be awfully high poly with all those cylinders.

as long as it is a prop it will be do-able (all buildings are, and most parts of vehicles)
if its a brush, it will indeed have to mutch polygons

All models are made in high poly and low poly versions, then normal mapped.

That is the high poly, dont worry about the polys :-)

Wait, but it looks like you've actually tried to keep the poly count low, there. If all the detail is going to end up baked into a normal map, why not go all out? And as for the gears and belts below the actual cannon... How do you plan to pull that off, if you don't mind me asking? (I swear to god, I'm not demeaning your abilities... I honestly want to know. I've done some modelling in XSI, but never for games or anything, and I'd like to pick up a few things if I can.)

normal mapping is easy, Ill make a lowpoly version with as many polys as Im allowed, tracing out the large features and ignoring the little ones.

I see an Ion Cannon from The Empire Strikes Back, or the Grand Cannon from Red Alert 2 (which was a lame weapon)

Personally The ultimate weapon would be an old bloke with a wet fish, leaning out of a jeep but there you go

Those look like infantry manned artillery cannon, Megel. Am I on the right track? :P

Also, in terms of Turret Cannons, we've got MLs, MGs, why not CLs? It's an automated turret that tracks like the MLs. Instead of firing a chaingun or rocket salvo, fires off dual cannons. Less accurate, but if you're not careful, gonna hurt.

For the purely cosmetic and down the road. Nothing dire. Rather have planes!
