So a certain company has announced a 12.2" fanless notebook with a 2560x1600 display. It weighs 2.09 pounds and is only 0.46" thick. Introducing…

…the Samsung 2015 ATIV Book 9. It has a number of nifty features, an outdoor display mode which doubles the display brightness from the normal setting (350 to 700 nits), a lossless audio player, and a button to hardware disable the camera and microphone so people can't spy on you using those devices. The pricing is reasonable:
    • $1199: 4 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD
    • $1399: 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD
Both of these variants will be released in early 2015.

So why the mention of Apple? Why not? Well, the Amazon.com page for the Book 9 curiously lists a "0.8 GHz Apple A4" processor in the technical details. (The Apple A4 did come in a 0.8 GHz configuration.) By the way, the Book 9 actually uses a Core M 5Y10c CPU, which is 800 MHz base and 2 GHz boost at the nominal TDP. I am also wondering if Samsung is using the cTDP down mode of the Core M to lower the TDP.

As of writing this post, the "Apple A4" is still on Amazon.

Samsung has also announced a 27" all-in-one with a 1080p curved display. I think it's the smallest curved display I've read about.

Sources: The Verge, PC Magazine, Samsung.

By the way, one rumor about the rumored upcoming 12" fanless MacBook states that it will come in Silver, Space Gray, and Gold colors, much like the iPhones and iPads. Make that of what you will.

By making you buy a new one. It's based on Apple; everything they make is marketed to morons.

    These are not features.

The next fucking ultrabook to come out will be 'featuring' an on switch.

Why do you think the A4 bit showed up on the Amazon listing? That's very odd.

We're talking about a Samsung product. They copy everyone else and end up with about 18 different SKUs in any given market segment where they really only needed no more than 3. They are pretty good at wringing out any marketing that they can get from a given SKU.

The last Apple A4 device was discontinued a few years ago. I'm guessing it is a strange but honest mistake or someone trolling in Amazon. If it's the latter than I think an A8X would have been better.

That A4 refers most likely to the AMD A4 6400T which is basically AMD's version of Atom.

Anyways, atleast we now know that the rumoured 12" MacBook Air is real. ^^
Core-M chips get about 80% performance of an ULV Haswell i5, so it's pretty decent actually.

    Apple should stick to ipods.

Everything else they make is an epic failure that people pay way to much to own. Does nobody remember the 90s? Nothing has actually changed in product quality; just sleek looking casings.

Oh herp derp, I forgot that amd used that notation.

So we're talking some kind of jaguar chip, eh? I'm not seeing a 0.8Ghz a4 branded chip though. They get close in the 1ish ghz range and the tdp is right fir this form factor, but I'm not seeing that exact clock. Amd chips don't have a ctdp down option, do they?

The relative quality went down. Until the 2nd coming of Jobs, Apple was way ahead of the curve.

I've been looking for a laptop for uni.
    There's one I definitely won't be buying.

Because it's light, beautiful, has a decent keyboard and an awesome display? For uni I always like the absolutely lightest device that gets the job done best.

I much prefer adequate cooling so I don't end up with 3rd degree burns on my thighs.

The Australian sun is probably more dangerous to your thighs than a CPU with a 4.5 watts TDP. ^^

I'll be doing fairly intensive stuff with it anyway so I think I need something with more oomph
