so obviously most of the empires community semes prefers the more "conventional" backward-swept wing design... so i roughly sceched this: i know its no a "VTOL", but meh....
lol? no meh ... if you want to show off you skills in drawing airplanes, there is a non empires related art thread. please dont clutter this forums even more. if you you think your planes deserve their own thread, post them in blackhole or offtopic. this part of the forum is for empires related art. empires will get VTOLs, so either stick with that, or use the other forums. there are reasons for VTOLs that have to do with (source)engine limitations. this is not because im a VTOL-fascist ... thanks
well, if you want to contribute you will need to stick with the rules. its not like "normal" planes are crap - its the engine that limits you to VTOLs. if you scale the map, you reach the limits of float32 and then you get weird results of all kinds of calculations. and, i guess you can see that current map sizes are too small for jetfighters ...
VTOL isn't so much due to engine limits, but that normal aircraft need a runway or other flat stretch of ground, which would be a pain in Empires.
ok... so I made a kind of VTOL design....... like it? PS. I know i suck at drawing stuff......so dont start bitching about it
why are people that obssesed with VTOL always try to make a fixed-wing plane that can take off vertically?
a harrier would hit the borders of the map before you can say aircraftfactory. besides that, fully loaded its not able to vtol
Load it up enough, it's not able to CTOL either. =P Point is, a VTOL aircraft can look like a conventional aircraft. There's no need for propellers unless you have an artistic goal in mind (as opposed to a functional one). ...Or if you're attempting for realism and realised that jets are a metric fuckton louder than helicopters. Interpretation 1: "fixed-wing" If it were a swing-wing plane, it would boggle their minds. Interpretation 2: "plane" A helicopter is not a plane. It's an aircraft, but so are blimbz.... (Though, they generally use the term aircraft while they're conspicuously not making helicopters or blimbz. That's highly suspect.) Interpretation 3: "vertically" If it can only take off horizontally, they probably don't know the definition of VTOL. Interpretation 4: "obssesed" all ur base are belong to them?
In GMOD gamemode created by jetboom, the flying mechanic was well made. It was hard to master, but very easy to understand. http://www.noxiousnet.com/forums/
Considering the #1 issue with the former aircraft implementation is that they will hit the side of the map before you can say 'whee i'm flying', then having a standard fixed-wing styled aircraft would confuse players on their flight capabilities. Current implementation is strictly helicopter styled flight, so, in my opinion, since they are going to fly like it, they might as well look the part.
