What air units do you think that will fit Empires?

    I was thinking about what if we would stop waiting for someone to make 16x hammer sized maps and instead add different air units?

    I have 3 sugestions:

    The originally planned: Fighters & Bombers
    Pros: Epic fights, bombing runs, interceptors, guided bombs.
    Cons: Maps need to be huge, wich is impossible in Hammer.

    Or Gunships & Helicopters
    Pros: Easier to code, big maps are not required, gunship/helicopter fights can be quiet interesting.
    Cons: Flying a helicopter just above land is hard, you can easilly crash into buildings, displacements and brushes, or you can get stuck.

    Or Zeppelins & Airships
    Pros: For da Lulz, Airships are big and bad, and they look awesome.
    Cons: *cough*Zeppelins are huge, it may be hard to navigate in a massive airship.

    Aircraft-Cons: Maps need to be huge, which is impossible in Hammer.
    I mean, it's easy not to crash in aircraft?

    Depends, a good pilot wont crash. But yes, it's a con too.

    And I am serious about this, altough I did Blimpzzzzzz for the lulz. But besides that I am serious about this thread.

    ... or Vertical Takeoff And Landing planes that launch from giant carrier zeplins, thus making everyone happy.

    Seriously, with the current map sizes Airplanes will be fricking stupid.

    It's like driving a Ferrari in your own garage, it's stupid.

    Gunships and Helicopters will fix the problem.

    Maps are too small. And with the moddels allready being VTOL it wouldn't be hard to switch from Airplanes > Helicopters.

    when THEY ARE IMPLEMENTED IN 3.0 all maps will be 16X as the classics will be, hope its not all just copyed and pasted though

    As I understood it, current maps will stay as they are, same size, no aircraft.

    Additionally there will be new maps with aircraft, that are eight times the size through the magic of scaling (play Eternal Silence to see examples of scaling, or rather don't see it because you don't notice scaling except for the maps being bigger).

    You can only scale the moddels, you cannot scale the maps.

    how do you think they make 3d skyboxes?


    Models cannot be scaled in hammer, they need to have a separate scaled model.


    Also, most models are already scaled, some need to be still, I'm told that is the easy part. The next step is to make a way for the game to distinguish between different maps in the emp_info_parameters entity to tell what models to use.

    This thread = fail.


    This also means we need all new props that are scaled down to 1/16 size, like trees and such. Unless from 3.0 and on, all trees are officially red woods or something.

    It was stated they'd all be vtol---suggests tactical weapons and flying tanks. Suggests flying APCs secondily.

    BF2 style air pwnage of the ground is a bad idea to be avoided---so probably no high speed units or bombers.

    What I ment is, the can make map smaller, but you cannot make them bigger then the actual hammer grid size. Because then the game would crash.

    The maps will stay as they are right now, the only way to make maps look like they are super massive is to scale the models.

    Even though, until that time it would be nice if we had some type of "aircraft", helicopters would be nice. And when the scaling is done > Fighters, Bombers & Transports.

    So.. Instead of focusing on finishing aircraft models and code, they should make new models and code?

    They continue to say "Aircraft will be implented very soon"

    And all the aircraft models are VTOL, therefore we can use those models and just code some helicopters.
