A quad-core HDMI drive

It wasn't long ago when I was surprised at the small size of NUCs compared to, say, the Mac mini. But PCs are getting smaller all the time, and here's one that you can plug into your TV: the Shenzhen Apec APM-D01.



The power is supplied by the micro-USB port (I assume you need a separate cable). Here are the specs of the base model:

• Bay Trail Atom Z3735F (4 cores, 1.33 GHz base, 1.83 GHz boost)
• 1 GB RAM
• 16 GB internal flash

There is apparently a slightly more powerful version with 2 GB RAM. A key aspect of this product is its ability to run Windows 8.1, which you'll have to install yourself because it doesn't come with an OS installed.

I've fucked around with an Android TV stick, but it's only useful for plugging into a 23" touch screen for a massive Android tablet. With these, I can easily stream Steam games to my HDTV, etc. I purchased a Chinese tablet with the Z3735F in it. Incredible battery life, responsiveness and robustness (never, ever crashed). The build quality of the tablet itself wasn't up to snuff, so I sold it some time afterwards and got myself a Surface 2 Pro at a discount. Gaming performance wasn't incredible, although it could run Civ 5 at native resolution (1280x800) pretty well.

Will definitely keep an eye on this and others like it.

I could buy a brand spanking new gaming PC every month with my income but I'm still using the one I built I built in 2009 and upgraded in 2011 with a new gpu and ram. How do you like the Surface Pro 2?

I really like the idea of those Surface Pros, but I hate the price. If I was a student, I would be all over a cheap Surface Pro 2.

 

I still run on a C2Q 9550 as my main rig
Just now that GTX970 is cheap I start to worry how much DDR2, the lack of Sata3 and PCIe 2.0 will limit me. Other than GFX cards I don't ever see a reason to replace 5 year old hardware.

Yeah, those things run HL2 on High. It'll probably play Empires at 30fps.
