It is called that because clients need it to connect to 2.27 servers. 2.27 works as a patch over 2.25. You can install it over 2.25 or 2.25b or 2.26 if you want. I really wish we could change new system that shows players into something where only one type of building reveals players in its proximity. Already seen it suggested and that's radar towers for infantry. Make them cheap and low health. Only when the team builds them can they spot enemies. It's impossible to battle near bases without everyone knowing where you are.
Like I said, 2.27 means it's a bugfix that client has to download. If it were 2.26a it'd mean it's server only.

There are now lua hooks for when people chat and when players do certain actions, as well as hitscans (I think) and a fix for the 50cal/pistol rate of fire getting raped by ping.
It's just a bugfix. Like MOOtant said, it's only 2.27 so that people have to use it to connect to the servers. The next release is a bigger one, this is more of a hotfix, but called 2.27 just to force people to update.
Well the point is, if they don't update and the server version is 2.26(a) and they have 2.26(normal), they won't see why they can't connect. At least if it reads 2.27, they know there's a new version.
That was one of the few things I tested before it was released, could you file a bug report on the bug tracker (www.empiresmod.com/bug_tracker/)?
