the first difference is, even if 90% want free beer its by far not the same as when its made law. the second difference is, a general ban would be unconstitutional in a lot of countries - if not all bc itd conflict with the echr. people can be banned as individual, but not generally. the third difference is, refugees cannot be banned as its against human rights.

tbh austrians are a lot like this dutcher guy. most only see them from afar, if they actually ever saw one. they look different, they hate them. because thats very austrian, you hate what you dont know. there was a survey - the strongest aversion against muslims was in rural communities with no muslim population. the least problems were reported in areas where there are the most. weird isnt it? could it be its just prejudgment? there was a refugee home built close to where my dad lives. my dad is a classic central european conservative, even was a functionary member of the union close to the conservatives (though conservative has a different meaning here, i guess in US terms hed be considered a social democrat with a higher emphasis on market economy as in opposition to socialist democrat party members, its more complex though). anyway, when it was decided, the FPÖ - our far-right party - immediately started a fearmongering campaign. ofc he was a bit scared aswell, in the end its only a few hundred meters to this building full of robbers, murders, suicide bombers, rapists and what other atrocities were attributed to them. now the refugee shelter got built anyway, think it opened like a year ago, maybe one and a half. recently my dad told me "wow, i dont understand why they made such a fuss about it, you barely ever see one anyway." needless to say, crime rates didnt go up either.
It would help if people who don't like Muslims from the Middle East understood how stupidly broad that statement is. It's so broad it's useless, inbetween that there are different beliefs, different countries/regions, languages/dialects, different levels of wealth & education. There are people who are on a basic level scared of different people, the guys who cross the street when they black folk because they don't know any black people, they just know that a disproportionate amount of crime is committed by black people on TV news and that's enough for them. They aren't thinking or interested to underatand that the issue of crime is not cultural or racial but socio-economic. Basically the man in the street isn't a good indication of what is right, just what is popular. So I don't care if 50% of Britain doesn't like Muslims because 80% of Britains have stupid, unfounded views.
