hypothetical; add a button in empires that the commander has to push every 10 minutes or their team loses. if he forgets it, the team deserves to lose, right?
Listen I watched the first season of Lost. That is time I'll never get back. They were some of the worst times of my life & I'll thank you to not trigger me.
what your polemic describes is pretty much the nature of games and maybe even the nature of life - unless you want the game to simply roll dice to determine the winner.
There's already a button that you have to push every minute or so, it's called research, and unless you push it, your team loses. Stop trying to be clever, it's not working.
its the nature of bad game design, heck the 'press button every 10 minutes' i got straight out of a game design text book... the gameplay from research comes from the choice, not from not forgetting it or being faster in clicking next research once the previous ended... If research would let you buffer 1 research in a cue no gameplay would be lost.
Dont worry about it, these books are made by people with tons of free time to ponder the question over and over.
I have to agree here, it is very rare for me to not be in full view, maybe only late game when you got them pinned down and are sure no threats can get by. If I trust the commander maybe, but there are very few I trust to spot everything. On the plus side X, you are one I would trust.
So one could hypothetically draw spoderman and sanic on the minimap. Why are we not funding this? *bump*
Old threads on this topic: 2006 https://forums.empiresmod.com/index.php?threads/draw-on-map.657/ 2008 https://forums.empiresmod.com/index.php?threads/draw-on-whiteboard-map.6224/ I might even have screenshots of how it looked in testing, but it'd take hours to find those.
I scratched around a bit in the code for this today. Mostly anything tagged with "TACTICAL_MINIMAP_AND_RESEARCH_OVERVIEW_ACTIVE" At minimum these files are missing and this class is not defined properly.... emp_vgui_drawableshape.* emp_vgui_drawablepanel.* emp_vgui_seadragon.* vgui::CEmpResearchOverview As mentioned, there is a bunch of code in here for this. Would be interesting to try and bring it back to life. Anyone have a really old copy of the code that might have these files? (not 100% they're needed yet, but probably) Future fun project maybe,
My easy answer is ... a bunch. As I activate chunks of it, new errors appear. Solve those and others take their place. The missing files add complications if they have to be reverse engineered. Also I'm guessing that the code hasn't been updated since SDK2005 ? Still it looks like it's worth a go since so much work is already provided and it seems to be a popular feature.
Yay, early christmas presents... if found. Good hunting. It would bring an interesting twist to the normal pregame chatter.
