Made some changes to the tracks and turret, fattened it up a bit and armored the sides so it is unmistakably NF. I liked the wheels and wanted to be able to give the tank a suspension animation but it's probably better this way. The turret needs to be scaled up to make the overall proportions better.
It feels like a heavy base with a medium turret. Mind for perspectives sake to blow up the size of the turret a bit and take a screeny with same perspective?
example of turret perspectives in a comparable tank design doctrine of a medium tank http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2/gb/photos/medium_tank_A7_big.jpg id say scale up the turret to double
OK, here's how it is currently: And here it is with the turret scaled up 1.2x I think I'm just going to take it back to the lower profile tomorrow, might adjust the hull so the larger turret looks better. I dunno, really, I think I'll just bring it into the game quickly to see what looks weirdest with the in-game camera settings. edit: Also, I think there's something to be said for the fact that all of NF's turrets seem to be proportionally very small, especially the current medium
Shit m8, my cat can draw better than that! To "what for": When tanks are not in use are covered to protect some parts and keep them clean. The ML has nice lids. Aesthetically, the tank looks good to me and I don't want any changes except for the missile launcher which I would like it to be external, but I don't mind in any case.
It looks perfect. But when the NF heavy gets done, it NEEDS a giant fucking plough at the front. Like, mecha one that nobody wants to fuck with.
@Avatarix you realise MS Paint actually has a text function right? jesus couple of notes from someone who loves tanks and goes around looking at them as often as he can (museums and such):
i like the new sides. prefer them over the old ones and it looks like an nf tank. but i dont understand what those inward squares inside the treads are supposed to be?
i believe its to keep weight down (in a practical aspect) or just look pretty, ill do some reaearch on it.
It was an interesting looking detail that popped up on a few reference images of tanks with fully armored sides.
Here's a look at the low-poly, e.g. the geometry that's going to be drawn in-game; 5000 tris for hull, turret, and guns. I'm going to make a more optimized LoD model too which will show up at a distance or for people with low model detail settings, hopefully. Any way we can keep that super high poly for the very high model setting? Would be nice if we could do that with all the tanks.
its a way to increase strength in the superstructure without adding too much weight, and it also allows easy attachment points for cargo. Its a design philosophy that survived ww1 tank doctrine. Is it safe to say you will stick to the larger turret?
The super high poly is 2 million tris altogether so far. I'd say I got most of the important stuff is preserved in the low poly, maybe a higher detail one could keep some of the hatches and more resolution on cylinders like the cannon barrel and headlights. More geometry also means I'd have to mess around more with the UVs for each LoD and probably would mean less average texture resolution, too. Yeah, the larger turret seems the right proportion overall, but tomorrow I will try and compile it for the first time and see how it looks in-game. Since the turret will be a separate model it can be fine-tuned on it's own down the line anyway.
