He makes games how he wants to make them and has proven all the games he was not involved with suffered dramatically in terms of quality and game play.

So what is the phantom pain?
It may be his last game ever, and it is not the first time he said this either.
He always wanted to get into movie making, and his partnership with del toro shows us that he has a talent for it.

But why is this last game though?
Because Konami has fired the fuck out of him and because of Kojimas lack compliance with the company for years has finally got to them.
This is entirely personal, it has nothing to do with his skills as a developer or he did anything wrong. Its Kojimas refusal to listen to the company and for good reason.
He knows how to make video games, they don't understand that and talk from the business prospective and make it all about money.
They got tired of breaking even on their most successful IP.

But still why metal gear?
Metal gear has always had a consistent quality, its until they started making hand held games with the ip did it start to suffer. And that was not his choice, he works with what was given to him and some of the metal gear games he was not allowed to work with period. Kojima metal gear games have always been good, and this is because of the amount of effort he puts into it. He always ran dev teams tyrannically but he was in the trenches with them putting in the same amount of hours. He leads them with himself in front instead of mushing them while sitting in a carriage in the back.

Now to address ground zeroes.
Ground zeroes was a full price demo. Metal gear games always had a prologue since mgs 2. What they did was take the prologue out of the game and sell it as a stand alone and added a bunch of fan service to it, something that a lot of us MGS fans love but a normal consumer would probably get pissed at.

It was marketed as a fan game in attempts to boost the budget for phantom pain and it succeeded. It worked really well at the expense of bad PR. And I think it was worth it, you can get ground zeroes for 20$ and it hosts 6 hours of content. From the main mission to 6 side missions. And a series of lore collectibles that add onto the story. They also put in a feature for you to upload your saved data from ground zeroes and it would port into phantom pain. The prisoners and soldiers you extracted will appear in phantom pain as staff to mother base.

Now they have a habit of releasing long videos show casing the game.

I don't think there's any problem with the coop game. If the soccer game was bundled with the coop game and not a dumb standalone that one wouldn't be a problem too.
