We have moved to a new dedicated server to keep running costs down.
There will likely be some teething problems as we get a few issues sorted out, mainly because I still haven't finished installing everything yet.
Emails from the forum and other websites might not work correctly yet either (should be working now).

Do you want to know who really was behind the forum downtime?

Old server was very fast. New one seems nice too. No complaints ^^

The biggest problem is installing all the windows updates, I already installed 200 of them and another 150 just appeared....
It takes hours and hours with multiple reboots. (Maybe the update servers were being slow)

How is your response not just "who the fuck uses windows for web servers?"

It's not just a web server.
Windows is a requirement to run the empires server and build server.

Empires doesn't run on linux, emp devs don't want to cross compile from linux to windows.
Also for compiling for windows; x86 exception unwinding mechanism will only match with the unwinding mechanism on external code if you use the windows compiler.

so when the server goes offline like it did a little bit ago, its because you are installing an update and not that the server sucks?

Well basically, all the updates get downloaded, 100% of updates are done, windows gets restarted, then says "hey, actually there's another 150 updates". Rinse and repeat until eventually there aren't any more.

With regard to the guy going "omg why windows web server", the server does a great deal more than just windows hosting multiple game servers, empires development stuff like the build server, web servers, teamspeak, VPN, etc. A great deal of that either doesn't work on Linux or needs a great deal of effort to work on Linux that simply isn't worth it.

And lastly, it's honestly just easier as far as people working on it to use Windows. Everyone is familiar with it and there's less chance of people breaking stuff. Multiple people use the server and it's important that everyone is able to use it effectively without causing problems.

Right, now i remember this one guy couple of years ago asking about a linux version and being told exactly this. Fair enough.

This is why I stopped freaking out about people using windows servers a while ago. Yes they are prone to more... issues but, they are easier to use for people who are less inclined to seek better pastures. Windows servers are Apple products for masses of people who don't want to put effort into things.

Well, that's a solvable problem. One linux box running a windows server VM for the stuff that need windows will do nothing but help you. Sandbox your environments, improve security, improve uptime during windows updates, etc. There's really no reason not to do this - it's not even difficult to set up.

It shouldn't be, really. Also, see above.

Empires doesn't run on linux because empires devs don't want to cross-compile. The distinction is important.

What would be involved with compiling for AMD64 instead?

Wow, even on Windows Server? That's absurd.

It sounds to me like you want one linux box running one guest VM. It doesn't take "a great deal of effort" to do that - any idiot can figure it out in 1 day UB.

Being afraid of change is backwards and archaic.

You know I wrote like a 4 paragraph wall of text rebutting most of the stuff said above but I just gave up and deleted it because it won't really accomplish anything.

@Grant Back in the last days of Napalm's box we did swap to either CentOS or Ubuntu (no GUI either way) for a while but I just found everything pretty tedious. I just feel like people tend to get high and mighty over using a command line OS, probably like I've been guilty of doing towards people using OSX in the past. At the end of the day, whatever allows you to accomplish what you want in the most efficient manner possible is the best system for you. If you just listen to music on an itunes account, browse the web and watch TV, then chances are OSX is probably the best OS for you (not that I've ever really used it). Same applies to our server. We know what we want it to do, and it does all of that without any problems, exactly how we want it to. Change for the sake of change is pointless and just has no basis in logic.
