If it's not already, would be cool to allow flags to be spawnable (if flagged as such, lol). And they also can give res, can't they?

I just feel that on new maps, it might be cool if we could mix up refs and flags, to open up gameplay a bit more. Right now, if you have a ref point you usually look to create a bunch of open ground to put a rax down, but if you had a flag instead, you could have spawns with less room around, and in places where it's not that useful to put a big building down.

This would especially make things a bit more useful with low pop games where you create something, then someone takes it down, then you have to run to the other side of the map to get it back up again...etc etc. It would also help if you're looking to create a skirmish map where people can sneak past the front line, and instead of that being the most obvious thing in the world it could be more stealthy.

Obviously it takes a bit more thought about where to put a flag, but it also has the potential to make maps a lot more dynamic.

You can already do that XD

Flags can give resources and can be used to toggle spawn points.

I thought they were already spawnable, but I wondered if there was a difference between the command maps and infantry maps. As well as some things like glycen city having mini flags that you can change class at, but not spawn at.

Then my real question would be...why aren't they used more? I mean refineries are all well and good, but we have a bunch of maps with areas where flags might be more suitable. Added to that, it's probably one of the easiest ways to make more interesting things happen on static maps and adapt high-pop maps to be low-pop friendly.

I was trying to think of a way to demonstrate what I mean, because it's pretty clear in my head. I don't think it's perfect but Isle comes to mind. There are a number of places on that map which could benefit from flags instead of refs, and would effectively widen the map from 40-60 players to a 20-60. Let's face it, if you have 10 people on your team, lots of maps suffer, and you need to gather res to build barracks and armouries and so forth, which take less time to destroy. Then your team are scattered all over the map, leaving only a couple to defend or attack a lot of areas. Midbridge is also a fairly good example of this - sometimes you spend more time building than doing anything else.

With big populations lots of maps fare pretty well. There are usually people pushing in most areas, creating a fairly dynamic battlefront. And no one has to really run for days from one side of the map to the other, just to rebuild something that will be taken down pretty quickly.

When people hear flags, they think about Coast or similar, where the flag is all about massive resource increases and is a make or break feature. What I'm talking about are more like mini-flags, where you can cap them fairly quickly, they give you an ordinary amount of res (or slightly less) and can function as spawn points - without having to build a base around them. Something that would work in addition to ref nodes where bases were more necessary...

I agree ikalx, little flags and stuff would work better for smaller pops. You just need to encourage mappers to make maps with that in mind, but empire doesn't really have many people wanting to make maps for it anymore.

Not that I can blame them, most of the custom maps are barely played anymore. Why would anyone want to spend time on something that will never be touched?

The flags at the wrong places can be virtually impossible for the other team to recap.

You're supposed to say, "Ok, Ikalx, it's in the newest version. Have fun!"

We need to continue to build the Candles mythology.

Yeah I hear that. I was thinking a bit about the maps we have already, though. I mean we have good maps, tons of them actually, but if we had a few adapted with flags, we could more or less instantly have maps that are much better for our low populations but still function well on high.

Definitely. I do totally agree that it's difficult, but then I would say the mandate should be to put a flag in relatively undefensible spaces, and have them act less like base areas and more like reinforcement spawns. It shouldn't be a place that people would find it easier to camp and slaughter people, or that people would be able to camp in. It should be easier to cap than camp. If you know what I mean..?

replacing barracks with flags just makes the game less dynamic
and if you make a flag visible on the minimap, everyone will go to it, regardless of its importance
