I've been watching Portugal play recently and I'm very impressed. However, they stand no chance against Spain. Germany is usually dominant too but I feel there will be disappointments.

In rugby you cannot lead with your head (not that you would want to) or shoulder charge the ball carrier. The defender must also make some attempt to wrap their arms around the runner. No such rules apply in American football, where the helmets are used as much as weapons as they are for head protection. Not that much protection either, given the incidence of early-onset dementia among ex-NFL players.

Rugby Union is a contact sport, Murrican Football is a collision sport (a less pansy/peasant version of League.)

The only protection I ever wore playing Union was a gumshield. Didn't stop me having my teeth smashed in though. Scrum caps are handy though, they stop forwards having their ears torn off.

Rugby Union played badly or without rules is more dangerous than AF but the are strict guidelines for tackling.

Rugby has a lot of bloody injuries. Teeth, Ears and blood. Yet the NFL players are the ones getting concussions and dropping dead once they retire. Rugby players max out at 280lbs due to stamina and mobility. NFL has 350lbs men hitting people head on.
NFL careers average 6 years. Rugby careers average 7. Except NFL players play 12 games a year during regular season. While Rugby plays about 32 I believe.

People forget that in the early 1900s American gridiron was played with leather helmets and it was safer. (like rugby)

What I mean is that you have dangerous plays in football where someone finds himself going up up in the air to catch a ball and these are only some of the many plays where one player is very vulnerable. Blind side hits are common too.
