i wonder how insurance will handle it.. that must be a lot of property damage and life insurance reinbursements.

i have a feeling california is next.. it seems that the earthquakes go in circle. from chile to new zealand then to japan.. next is probably alaska or california to become full circle eventually.

it seems that the next one will probably be at least 7.0. Its also scary, that i drive by san onofre nuclear plant almost every weekend. they claim that they have tsunami walls that are like 25ft high.. but wasnt teh wave in japan like 30+ ft?

Those in Japan were only 10 ft or something. (I use metres, so I have no idea how "tall" 10 ft really is.)
Don't bitch at me for "being wrong". My American geopraphy teacher showed us some pictures and animations today about waves and stuff.

    *EDIT*
Nevermind. It was 10 metres. Apologies for confusion.
    Anyhow, that's...uh... scary tall.

those walls dont need to be as high as the wave to be effective

If you followed the news you would know, they don't pay because tsunamis and earthquakes "aren't" covered by them, well we will see what will happen after countless of proceedings.

tsunamis and earthquakes are considered acts of god aren't they? Yeah i don't think any insurance company actually insures against that

    ...

    no.
financial companys dont cover them since if they actually do happend they would lose a fuck ton of money at once which could lead to bankruptcy.

that some whackos think its an act of god is unrelated.

in belgium floods and earthquake damage etc is insured, especially (forcefully) if the state declares it a "national disaster"

socialism ftw, ive seen it be declared a couple of times concerning floods flooding large parts of cities

dude if the insurance contract specificly states that it doesnt cover earthquakes and tsunamis etc then the state can do fuck all about it.
It has nothing to do with socialism etc.

In the case you described i bet it was some gray zone contract or some company giving bullshit excuses for not handing out money while the people should get it acording to the contract.

This year in Canada it was particularly cold, with no thaws, which lead to a huge buildup of ice on peoples roofs. There were like 1 foot thick chunks of ice up there, and right in the middle of the winter my mom got a letter from her insurance company stating they are "not covering water damage due to excess ice around the property". It seems like a lot of times they just don't cover anything that you would really need them to at the time. Shortly after getting that letter water started leaking through the ceiling and wall under the worst ice buildup. Insurance companies are shady.

According to Maude Flanders, why doesn't Ned believe in insurance?
He considers it a form of gambling.

You can remove ice from the roof though. If your insurance policy protects against water damage from flooding, the letter might have just been a nice reminder that they don't cover certains forms of water damage.

As far as insurance in japan, I have no idea. I would imagine that the government, along with charitable associations like the international red cross, will work with people to try and restore some form of normalcy to the situation. Japan has a strong economy, and is not a third world country. They are quite as capable as the US in cleaning up after a natural disaster.

Not that the US was particularly great at it, but ya know...

Don't buy insurance, just put money in a long term high interest savings account.

Keep adding at the same rate you pay fees.

Experience profit/savings/'omg my house is under 30 m of water, help' money.
