I was thinking prehaps we could play through Xcom as a community.
One person plays the game for maybe a year? (Less?) and then hands the save file on to the next person, with different people narrating etc.

    Who's in?
    I'm thinking we should:
    1) get the 3rd party patches that fix super hard difficulty
    2) perhaps put in some limitations, no tanks or something

Discuss, and sign up if you're interested.

Xcom, Xcom.... Ah that old game someone (you?) made a thread about a long time ago.

I guess I'd be up for it.

This time you'll actually be playing it though, like the DF lineage thingy.

The Game would be won probably before one year is over. Also I doubt anybody would be willing to play a game with such bad graphics and handling over such a long period.

It's only a little difficult in the beginning. Becomes much too easy after first armor research. With an "easypatch" wouldn't it be even more boring?

Yeah but one month is pretty short, especially if nothing fuckin happens (which does happen occasionally)

And on the patch, no matter what, vanilla Xcom always reverts to the easy difficulty.

That's right, the horrendously difficult game that people have spent ages raging at the complete BS and difficulty has been played at minimum difficulty for most players. It actually gets harder.

I played so many clones of xcom, I don't even which one was the original anymore...

I guess it was the one where, after I researched those flysuits, I spent hours in one mission to perfectly choreograph the actions of the soldiers so none of the 8(16?) dies whilst I capture as many aliens alive as possible until I found out that there was something like a console telling me which aliens were commanders....

Let me just say that you can play Xcom in "multiplayer" All you would have to do is swap saves after each turn and make extensive use of Xcom Util. I have no idea how to use Util for physical memory editing but some of the SomethingAwful Forum users have done something like this for UFO defense and TFTD.

Also if you want to make the difficulty function properly you need Util and a windows version of the game; MS-DOS doesn't function with Util.

@ Sprayer, you're an idiot if you dicredit a game from 1993 for having bad graphical display.

@ Empty Multi-player sounds like a better idea, but you need to get the windows version of Xcom.
(Steam version won't work, you can't use util on that.)

I think Vess knows more about this than I do.

No not VS mode, I've never heard of that.
    What is it?

You can take Vanilla Xcom (TFTD or UFO:d)
and swap the save files between you and your opponent as you each do a turn. Although there are limitations because you don't just end your turn otherwise the AI will take over for the opposite player, so you can't use grenades or any timed explosive, fatal wounds don't kill and there is no panicing as you can't end a turn and have people go berserk.

I think you use Xcom Util to edit the physical memory of the game and restore the TUs to your units as if you just started a fresh turn. You also use it to make the aliens player controlled by modifying some sort of Hex.

This sounds cool, I'd be in, in about 3 weeks after my upcoming exams (more like 2, now). Still haven't played xcom, but I can learn.

You think people would actually wait that long for their turn though?

The graphics is just bad compared to nowadays games. No sense in denying that tard.
Also the handling still is just bad. I bet in that time there were games with better one.

Xcom came out in 1994, along with DOOM2 and System Shock.
I think it's damn good for that era.

Of course they are bad compared to games made today, even then games today always seem to be about how stunning the graphical decor is.

Honestly Xcom was fairly CPU intensive for its day because of all the calculations involved in shooting, map generation, explosions, etc etc.

You can't compare Xcom graphically to games made today, it may be true that it doesn't look as good modern games; but it doesn't mean you can discredit the now dissolved micropose studio for being artistically lacking.
