Any empty vehicles on a team should have the capability of being controlled by the commander. Infantry getting into a commander controlled vehicle's driver slot overrides commander control.

Commander remote control could be pulled off in various ways.

In Men of War, selecting a unit and holding right control allows you to control its movements using the directional keys and firing by normal shooting controls and such.

In Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, you can switch view on the crosscom to vehicles which you could then control. Described, not depicted in video, but you get the idea.

support, except the vehicle should not be able to fire weapons when controlled by the commander.

Logistics only, no meta boom tanking

Can't we used existing HL2 path finding code to have the tank drive back to base in first gear if com tells it to?

Hmm... Would walls block it since thats not really part of the map?

Pathfinding would probably overcomplicate the task of just clicking close areas and vehicles driving in a linear path.

And with Men of War style controls, movement would just be limited to forward and reverse gears and turning, like normal vehicle driving.

why is the commander forced to the comm vehicle anyway?
now that targeting is gone - why not give the comm a neat handy notebook with 4G and let him command from anywhere? obviously comms are underemployed (?) nowerdays anyway ...
the comm vehicle could still stay the victory condition and due to its fucking tough armor and hull it still provides good protection.
also, obviously youd need your notebook to enter the CV, for whatever reason - maybe it has a keychain attached? (for those who need a story element for everything) :P

@flasche: It's an interesting idea, but it might get a bit confusing when you start tying people up with this pen-chain. Switching commanders on the fly and other tasks just become more complicated.

for the switch commander on the fly case you could just to it like with squads - "promote to commander" - then the player gets a message to accept and if he does so, a new notebook is dropped from orbit (for those that need reason behind everthing) or just appears magically out of nowhere.
also dont let commanders drop out of squads for no apparent reason.

oh and obviously, while the commander is dead he cannot do the command thing.
if the comm drops, people can "apply for commander" and one gets randomly picked (as i see it atm, noone would want take over anyway  )
and ofc the same thing happens if you f-s-space teh comm ;)
