We were planning on releasing the next version of Empires with sse2, we didn't think that people might have issues with that. Until I received a crashdump that pointed exactly that out. How many do still have ancient cpus, that do not support SSE2. If you are unsure go to http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php and post the report under about->save report here.

If you know that your cpu does support SSE2 do not post here.
    Keep the thread clean please.

    Edit: dlls for old cpus:

    http://empires.theowningone.info/sse1/server.dll
    http://empires.theowningone.info/sse1/client.dll

Overwrite the files in /Source Mods/Empires/bin with those two.
Do not use these dlls with modern cpus, they should be slower by a considerable amount.

Instructions sets MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3 Dz.
Also, depends if Bumgravy comes out. Also, if someone sent you a crashdump, surely that means someone has that.

I really couldn't imagine someone running something lower than a Pentium 4 or Athlon 64 who plays Empires.

I agree. We can't hold back progress due to a rare few individuals who have POS computers.

The idea is to make client.dll faster. There is some code that decides at runtime whether you have SSE/SSE2. But some parts get much faster when knowing that computer has SSE2 at compile time.

Only Athlon MP/XP doesn't have it if you count CPUs that can run Empires.

    Dubee: yes.

Depends on the performance increase though, it might not necessarily be worth it. If anyone has a really old celeron laptop, they should check on there.

EDIT: Can we not have 2 different DLLs?

Only if all servers run with -insecure. We will try to find a solution, but I want to know how many people this will actually affect. According to Steam 98% of the users have it. But since our playerbase does not really contain a lot more then 1000 players, I do not want to just ban 20 people without having to.

There are some other possible solution, this thread is mostly to how many people it would affect, and if we should try to use one of the a bit more complicated solutions.

I still have an Athlon XP1800+ (only SSE) as my second PC.
Empires is also installed there to play some rounds with friends, when they visit me. Would be nice if this will still work, because I bought a second HL2 for this PC.

You're not banning them, you're just giving them a big middle finger up telling them their computer sucks balls.

I've run with different DLLs before. The old NESQUIKO GUI had that.
