Right now, there are basically three noteworthy engines: The "fast" 3-phase, the "heat-management" advanced coolant, and biodiesel for its special ability. There was some discussion a while back about differentiating the others, but nothing came of it. But really, we already have a way to differentiate things. All our engines are basically the same weight (I think only Plain differs from the others.) And their weight is too small to be meaningful in any case. So. The solution seems easy to me: Raise the weight of all existing engines and the weight limit of all tanks by the same amount (these will cancel out and have no effect on their own, since you can't not use an engine.) Then, using the margin created by the larger engine weight, choose one of the two 'generic' engines and make it the "light" engine. Nuclear would be logical. Easy enough to do. The exact numbers might require some balancing; it's a bit tricky, since if you drop the weight of Nuclear below standard, you're basically giving 'free' additional weight capacity to people who use it. But I think that it certainly could be balanced, and would make for a comparatively easy-to-implement way to add more options for engines.
I like it. Weight can easily rebalance the power of a technology when players need to think about their armor around the essential engine.
Gas turbine seems like it'd need the boost more. It comes with advanced machining, which is only shared with composite (which is also lightweight), and Fission performs better in every way except for cooling, so turbine suffers from a serious lack of appeal.
fission and gas turbine definately need the lion's share of this buff. Bio desel, depending on the times for the next research tree, might need this as well.
I moved gas turbine down one item (now in the root of mechanical engineering). I don't think it would be a good idea to lower it's weight as well, seeing theres already a big chance everyone is going to get gas turbine now.
Perhaps, but gas turbine has always been the engine with no easily discernible advantage, weight would change that.
I don't know the heat value off the top of my head, but if it is anything less than fission it must have lower wieght, because it is a PoS engine. If anything, it is the worst engine.
Please D:? And like dizzy said, turbine being moved down a tier means it will be researched a whole lot more. This seems like a nice buff to fission however
Well then, I agree! It can be the new Bio Diesel. Unless it keeps its 120 second research time. Then it's the new new Bio Diesel.
Its 150 sec but on the other hand lt mk2 with reactive and gas turbine need 60 sec less reseach time then LT mk2 with reactive and 3phase now :D...
