    HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING,
if there were helicopter and slow-velocity VTOL type aircraft in Empires, what kind of control scheme would you favour?

    Option A - C&C Renegade
    w/s for move forward/backward
    a/d for turn left/right
    jump for increase height
    crouch for decrease height
Auto pitch and roll correction so you can't flip it easily. The player aims weapons with the mouse. Essentially how the current vehicles handle, but in the air.

    Option B - Battlefield 2
    w/s for accelerate/decelerate
    a/d for steer left/right
    up/down for pitch forward/back
    left/right for roll left/right
Weapons have to be locked straight forward, because of the two-handed nature of flying controls. You'd have to aim by tilting and rotating the entire craft manually.

    Option C - Metal Smith's Suggestion
    Jump / Crouch: Power
    w/s: forward tilt/reverse tilt
    a/d: side tilt
Mouse Look: MG mounted gun aim, (assuming a 3rd person helicopter is coming up).
Aiming to the side past the max turret range would cause the helicopter to turn.

Option D - Tovarich Cookie's Suggestion (reminds me of GTA Vice City for PC)
    mouse: pitch and roll
    a and d: yaw
w: accelerates forward when in aircraft mode.
    s: hovers in place.
    crouch: decrease vertical thrust
    space: increase vertical thrust
Bad for people with inconsistent mice, weapons locked forward so aiming is difficult.

    Option E - UT2k4
    w/s for accelerate/decelerate
    a/d for strafe left/right
    jump for increase height
    crouch for decrease height
Weapons are locked to the front of the vehicle, but aiming is easy with the mouse. Essentially, this is infantry movement with 'noclip'.

    Discuss.

I like how you make C&C Renegade sound worse to them Battlefield 2.
However, Empires does not Battlefield 2 at all. Go C&C Renegade/UT2004.

Renegade, the flying was fun and easy
Battlefield 2 however, if you don't dedicate every game to practicing flying you suck

I would like the rotors to be controlled by mouse. Move mouse down to go forward, up to go back, left to turn left, right to turn right. A/D to lean to the left and right. W/S to power the rotor

    And they will
Its not very fun where you have to dedicate your life to being good at flying in a video game though

Definitely C&C. Empire's is not a flight simulator, so the controls shouldn't be like one. I think this option has the smallest learning curve.

I mean quit flying :P . It might even encourage them to play more just so they can learn how to drive a plane like the "pros"

I believe using the mouse to glide the helicopter will fell the most natural. It may not be as easy as pressing WASD, but it'll feel right

Better idea: use the mouse to change the pitch and turning, while using A/D to strafe, jump to ascend, crouch to decend, W/S to accelerate/decelerate, and, holding sprint, you can tilt/roll the helicopter in the direction pressed on the AWSD keys.

Funny you should mention that; I was actually advocating C&C Renegade in the discussion leadup to this thread. I never really liked the tricky mouse/keyboard combo steering of BF1942.

Doesn't work as well when you involve gravity.

    Jump / Crouch: Power

    w/s: forward tilt/reverse tilt
    a/d: side tilt
Mouse Look: MG mounted gun aim, (assuming a 3rd person helicopter is coming up).

aiming to the left after a +-45/ +-30 degree turret turn (or max turret turn, whether it be a 90 degree forwards aim or a 60 degrees forward aim) would start the helicopter to turn.

Power + tillt = speed. or rather, the total power / angle = power towards direction = speed or something like that.

So if you want to go fowards, you will start to fall unless you increase your power.

And how about r = hover. or E. Whichever. It would return the helicopter to neutral position, no tilt, no excess power.

Or if you can incorporate the tilt into automatic power adjustments and make it just move you forward with a tilting motion without dropping, that might be easier on handling.

i think certain aircraft should be moreeasy than others, fighters shouldbe easy to use, transports shouldbe easy, gunshipshsould be a bit more tricky to stay steady adn bombers should be pretty easy to fly at high altitudes, but a bitch at low due to the size
